Ive played 150 hours and barely explored 10% of the island map, let alone explore underwater, caves, see any alpha dinos or bosses. Or the Centre map
Switched servers to join a group on the centre map and seen them grow from 4 of us on a raft to a massive metal base decked out with turrets, every dinosaur that is useful and seen them setup a massive breeding system. Getting geared up to raid some others bases!
I also got gifted Scorched earth dlc from a friendly chap and joining them building up there. Best $20 odd dollars ive spent on any game and i can see myself playing this for many more hundreds of hours.
The pvp is brutal and unforgiving. You can spend hundreds of hours buiding a base and have it destroyed in an hour.
But the single player / hosting your own server is great and you can use it like creative mode to just build, and not worry about the harsh survival aspects.

Currently on sale 67% off on steam
Also on sale on other platforms.

I've played 550 hours now and it has really got me into the survival genre. It's fun solo but definitely more fun in a tribe with others. And after 300 hours on official pvp servers I've been playing unofficial  (5x rates) on a primitive plus server with offline raiding protection. I should have done unofficial sooner!

Ark officially released not long ago.
I'm tempted to jump back into this on pc on an official server.

I'm not sure about ps4 as I have it on pc. This game is best on unofficial servers (hugher rates otherwise on official you spend all time gathering resources just to be offline raided) and certain mods improve quality of life drastically. Ps4 I believe you can play unofficial servers (higher rates) but don't think you get mods.

It seemed ok on XBox One, although my son was more into it than me. And yes you could play on unofficial servers, not sure about mods.

Is it possible to play this solo, not on servers or it has to be multiplayer?

Yes it is possibly to play single player (local / offline), also possible to play solo online but in PvP servers it's tough, especially official. I'd recommend PvPvE and unofficial with mods like offline raid protection.
Best suited playing with a small group. Large tribes can get out of control!
But I have played solo tribe a lot, usually having allies and keeping on good terms with others in the server.

@M-Rossi is Ark enjoyable in solo (single player game) or pve Servers?

It can be fun solo. It is such a great game with so much potential. I played a crazy amount of close to 900 hours in the span of 3-4 months (5-10 hours daily).
But there is many issues with PvP and online for always online games like this. Eg., spent 2 weeks harvesting and collecting stone to build a base, then have a server hoper (when they just introduced it), come in and blow it to pieces while offline, in seconds... All dinos killed, some of which took hours to tame, others days to breed and raise...

The best way to play is in a Single Player game, or private server / really good custom server / hire your own server.
It is so enjoyable with others, but can be played solo. To be honest I played mostly solo on official servers before moving to modded servers, mostly playing with one or two others. The harvesting / taming rates are too slow on official, so thats partly why your own server settings / custom ones are better. There was a period I was part of an alpha clan but it then just became like work / to do the maintenance chores to collect eggs, feed dinos for such a large base.
I had a lot of fun base building and breeding dinos on a pve server with low population.

You thinking of playing on ps4 or pc?

I may be tempted to jump in and have a run, but it can be a massively time intensive game!
Also a lot of content / changes has happened since I last played!
There was a couple of good modded servers I would recommend.
https://www.playark.com.au - has a great active admin and local community and different servers

I will have a look at that server, but may start a locally hosted game first so I can change all the settings (like 10 minute taming). Pretty sure people can jump in while I play, but tethering occurs when entering caves. Not sure if it will actually fit on my SSD.

Yes others can jump into your single player server. Progress gets saved.
I recommend acm admin management mod, I'll have to look up a good list of mods, just a couple are great quality of life mods, e.g. stacking items, S+ building mod for pickup able pieces.
I'll download the updates on my ark tonight ;)

Not sure if the mods are large (s+ in particular) but I may struggle to install them. A few essentials should be ok. I was definitely interested in s+ (but its probably the largest mod). If you know how to get bugged metal nodes to respawn (admin) that would also be handy.

I may play through astroneer first though as it is a shorter game, but will load up vanilla Ark tonight for a quick look.

I can load my single player tonight and invite you.  Or just mess around is a pve to get a bearing on things.
There a lot to tge game.
S+ is a must, you don't want to demolish a wall cause it's facing the wrong way and it auto demolishes all the connected pieces load bearing on it like I did in vanilla official servers..
Acm is a must for single player to spawn in things

Ok, let me know if you think of any other must-have mods. I think I installed all Ark DLCs, thats why it is taking up most of my SSD. Should be enough room left for some mods. Gotta love the steam workshop.....makes mods so easy to install.

Must say that I am glad to be playing it with mods - some aspects would be tedious otherwise.
