Elite Dangerous: Horizon
« on: December 22, 2015, 05:30:14 PM »
Anyone have this game or at least vanilla ED? Horizon now lets you land on planets etc.

I've been busy looking into this game and really looking forward to Eve Valkyrie, possibly Star Citizen for PC. Will prob stick to PS4 for No Mans Sky when its cheap as that game is starting to sound a little more of a discovery type of game without much action.

Just read as well that Oculus will include Eve Valkyrie if you preorder.

I've been eyeing this off for the the Xbox One. Too many games to play at the moment to justify the purchase though.

Ive got vanilla Elite Dangerous on xbone. Still go back to it now and then but it can get boring on your own.

Ahh man wish this came to PS4 sooner, already have it on Xbone and sunk so much time into it, fore warning to anyone looking at it, there is no story and it's just a massive grindfest... it's fun and really well done for a space sim, but it's very much a sandbox game that you make up your own fun with.

Ummm, why would this make you bite for the VR, it's a non VR game!  Unless I have missed something.

It's VR on PC and the devs are "looking into" making it PSVR compatible (see first comment on announcement from Dale Emasiri, community manager of Frontier):

We’ve been a huge supporter and a flagship game in the VR space, so it’s something that’s important to us as a company. We have no news or info on it just yet, but currently we’re looking into bringing the game to PSVR.

Ive never really looked into ED, but constantly hear things about it on other similar games threads I follow.
It seems to have a lot of pros and cons.
I think @AkyraStrike  has summed it up
fore warning to anyone looking at it, there is no story and it's just a massive grindfest... it's fun and really well done for a space sim, but it's very much a sandbox game that you make up your own fun with.
I have heard that it is challenging to fly and dock etc.  (which i like in Kerbal Space Program) but a massive grind to actually fly and gather stuff. I guess it depends on personal preference. I played a lot of Ark Survival over the past few months and that is a massive grind, but for the most part the grind isnt too bad. But the grind does take its toll when your doing it solo after many hundreds of hours, co op is what holds it together.

I have heard that it is challenging to fly and dock etc.

It takes a little getting use to the flight controls and especially navigating your ship menus, you have to look left and right in the cockpit to access various things, but once you memorise where the comms menu is, targeting menu, etc. it comes natural.

Docking can be tricky at first, but the proceedure is:

1. Approach to within 7.5kms of the base
2. Use comms to request docking permission (if you fail to do this and enter the station you have 90sec to get out of dodge or the station will obliterate you in a hail of laser fire).
3. Station will generally grant access, though if all docking pads are in use you will be denied and have to wait until someone leaves
4. Enter station and reduce speed (you can be fined for speeding haha)
5. Lower landing gear
6. Line up landing pad using docking computer and land.

Generally thats how it goes, but there are a few differences with some, for example there are 2 main types of stations, smaller open stations where essentially it's just landing on a heli-pad on the side of a station, and then full on space stations where you have to enter through a mailbox slot then find your landing pad, these are a bit more trick as you have to watch for traffic especially through the slot as they're generally only wide enough for 2-3 ships tops.

It also depends highly on your ship, small nimble fighters are relatively easy to maneuver and dock, whilst bigger freighters or capital ships can be a nightmare.

Anyway, I've rambled about this more than probably necessary haha, but honestly it is a good game, very solid space sim with a surprising amount of depth, you just need to find it yourself. The grind isn't horrible, but again comes down to how you play, you can bounty hunt for an hour and rack up 1mil credits or you can load a freight and plot a trade route that might take you hours but the returns could be several million etc.

Is anyone interested in Elite Dangerous on ps4?

Very spaceflight-sim but can't find much info about what your goals in the game are - other than cargo hauling and the occasional dogfight, in order to buy better ships.

I probably steer clear because it's possibly a giant time sink that will take me away from playing all my other games.

Unless it gets a VR patch. Then I'm in

Already brought it on xbone, but given the Xbox hasn't been unpacked since I moved in March, I could be tempted to buy again on PS4 to try horizons

Other than landing on planets I'm not sure what else it adds. Is the game just an open sandbox with small missions to earn money and reputation?

Horizons adds "the engineers" which are specialised people that you have to collect certain things for in order to max out aspects of your ships too.

It's sandbox where you just do what you want, be a bounty hunter, trader or pirate etc. There is a whole deeper faction war aspect which I never quite got into, but yeah generally the game doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do, it just dumps you in a sidewinder and lets you loose on the universe.

There are community goals that run from time to time that can range from fighting a war to transporting goods, these can net you a big pay day.

I watched a few videos last night to find out it is a game being continually updated. Horizons is like a season pass which has been slowly updated (rather than an expansion which has most of its content on day 1). Seems a bit like early access.

Don't know if it would be better to just wait until the devs finish adding content - therefore getting a more complete game.

Not sure that will ever happen, the games been out on PC since 2014 and Xbox since 2015 and it's still 'evolving', latest update added multi-crew for bigger ships.
