Days Gone
« on: June 14, 2016, 12:53:37 PM »
Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game where you play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who would rather risk the dangers of the broken road than live in one of the “safe” wilderness encampments. The game takes place two years after a global pandemic has killed almost everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and quickly evolving. In the demo you saw two types of Freaks – Newts, which were adolescents when infected, are opportunistic hunters, preferring to hit and run from the shadows; and a Horde. Made up of hundreds of individual Freakers, Hordes eat, move and attack together, almost as one. Some Hordes roam the highways at night, while others, like the one in the demo, have found a food source that keeps it in a single location. Skills learned in his prior life as an outlaw biker have given Deacon a slight edge in the seemingly never-ending fight to stay alive. But will it be enough?

Did you see how many zombie things they were rendering on screen in the live  demo at the end of the conference? It was pretty impressive!

Correct. I've just updated the OP with a description from the PS Blog, they are alive, but mutated humans. What they mutate into depends on what age they were infected at, so there are different 'classes' of enemies.

Semantics.

Zombies don't have a set in stone lore.

Take 28 days later as an example - it is lumped into the general zombie genre despite it being about some sort of contagion which 'turns' living people.

The term 'zombie' gets thrown at anything that looks dead and / or is some form of flesh / brain eating humanoid. I guess you could argue that a pandemic that turns people could also make them mutants or something.

I typically associate the word zombie with the historically slow shuffling kind (a-la early Resident Evil games or The Walking Dead (tv)). Anything, whilst may be labelled a zombie, it doesn't click as a zombie in my brain.

I'm the same as AS, Zombies are meant to be slow shuffling things. ie. TWD.
I never felt quite right about rage infection in 28 Days Later (or other movies and games with fast zombies)

DayZ always drew me in the with slow zombies, but i always hated when they went agro and could run you down.

As I said, it's just semantics and personal opinion.

There are those who argue that the walking dead are not zombies because they don't target brain eating specifically.

I just think they must be undead - doesnt matter about movement speed. But if there is no logical explanation then I just throw it in the bin anyway - that's why I prefer infected over zombies.

As far as Days Gone is concerned - pandemic is a decent setting. The infected need nourishment still, but I would like to know why they attack uninfected and not eachother.

The main character was a biker before the outbreak and now is some sort of bounty hunter.

Why does there have to be some kind of overwhelming enemy such as zombies, mutants, whatever you want to call them? All I want is a post-apoc survival/exploration game where the bad guys are just humans, and not inherently evil or aggressive. Fallout 4 came close, but also has zombies and all manner of monsters/creatures/deadly robots. Turn Neo Scavenger into a sandbox 3d based game and I'd be happy.

I recall a while back a game that the creators were going to try and map the planet and it was just going to be open world and you just interacted with players you ran into. Not sure what happened to that?

First Hour of Gameplay

Good to see it in a playable state - had not heard much about it for ages. Obviously needs some polish but interested to hear if the story turns out to be any good.
